A 13 year old boy growing up on an Indian Reservation’s mother is raped. The boy and his father are involved in the investigation and eventual result. A great story that is very suspenseful at times and is beautifully written. I have read and enjoyed most of Louise Erdrich’s novels over the years and this one is especially good. This novel won the National Book Award for Fiction just this week while I was reading it.
We went on a road trip to Cincinnati last weekend to visit Jack. My parents picked me, Sophie and Grace up at home around noon on Friday and we met Claire and Courtney in Strongsville for lunch as they left right from work at noon. We had a quick Panera lunch and then back on the road arriving at Cincinnati around 5:00. We stayed at the Embassy Suites in Kentucky across the river as we stayed there last time and enjoyed it. We got an extra big room as we knew we had a lot of people. My parents had a room right next to ours. Sean, Jack and Jenni met us at the hotel and we had a nice cocktail hour in our room having the kids running down to get the free drinks. We walked across the Roebling bridge to get to the Moerline Lager house where we had dinner. The Roebling bridge was built in 1866 and is the longest suspension bridge when it was built. It is beautiful and amazing that it is almost 150 years old.

We had Embassy Suites breakfast and then headed out to Jack’s house as Jack, Jenni, Claire and Sean went to U of C after dinner last night and slept there. Jack is staying in the house next to where he was last year…not as nice but not awful. We went on a walk around the campus as my parents have never been there before. We walked for around an hour checking out the impressive new architecture, the football field, the bookstore and enjoyed walking around on a beautiful Saturday morning.

After walking around we drove downtown to check out the Findlay market and had lunch there. We went back to the hotel and relaxed in the afternoon – watching football, going for a walk outside and drinking more beer. We went to the Hofbrauhaus for dinner and the kids stayed at the hotel for the night and playing cards and drinking (more) beer. I think beer was the common theme of the weekend 🙂

After another Embassy Suites breakfast we dropped Jack and Sean off at Jack’s house around 11:00, Sean was catching a bus back to Athens, and then we took off. We stopped at the nice outlets between Cincinnati and Columbus and made it home around 5:00 or so.
As we were staying on the Kentucky side of the river, we walked across the Roebling Bridge on a beautiful night to go to Moerlein Lager House which is right on the river between the two stadiums. The place, just recently opened this year, was packed and was huge. We had a 7:30 reservation but had to wait a bit as there was ten of us. Everyone had some of their beer which was very good…had already been drinking a lot already thanks to Embassy Suites Happy Hour. We split a platter of pretzels with cheese and mustard and a plate of fried pickles and jalapenos. I had a grilled cheese with short ribs in it – very good. Lots of food had by all and all very good. A very nice place to go with a spectacular view…would be nice to go in warm weather as they have seating outside as well.

Findlay Market
We went to Findlay Market for a quick lunch as we had a big Embassy Suites breakfast and we were planning an early dinner. Findlay Market is a few miles north of downtown Cinci in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood which is an area the city is trying to re-vitalize…similar to Ohio City / W.25th street area here in Cleveland. It looks like they have a longggggg way to go though as it appears to be in the middle of ghetto. The market was cool though…a smaller version of our West Side Market. The place was packed as it was a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon. We walked around a bit, found a table, found the beer sample guy, had some tacos and gelato and sat in the sun.
waiting for everbody elsethe tacos were very good.…and of course the gelato was good.
Hofbrauhaus
We went to the Hofbrauhaus for dinner on Saturday which is in Newport, Kentucky just a mile or so from our hotel. We went early as we know it is always crowded. We got there around 5:15 and were told the wait would be an hour. The good news is that they have a great outdoor beer garden to wait in and it was a great afternoon to sit outside and have a beer…a big beer.
big beers. happy parents.cheers
eating dinner inside
We eventually made it inside for dinner. We didn’t get to sit in the main room where the polka band was playing, we would have had to wait another hour. But dinner was good…not great…but a fun place to go.
Famous Brooklyn bank robber Willie Sutton is released from prison after spending twenty years behind bars. A journalist and a photographer bring him around his old haunts where the novel goes back and forth between past and present. Fictional biography I guess this would be. An interesting read but not too exiting.
An orchardist in Washington State in the early 20th century grows apples and apricots on his large farm. Two teenaged pregnant sisters show up on his property and change his way of life. I liked the language, pace and atmosphere of this novel.
I got my smitten kitchen cookbook in the mail the other day. It looks like a good one. I haven’t gotten a new cookbook in a long long time and have been looking forward to this one. Smitten Kitchen is one of my favorite food blogs that I have been following for the past couple of years and have made many things from. The cookbook is mostly new recipes and having looked at it just a bit I’m hoping good things are soon to follow. I was just reading that she is currently on a book tour on the west coast and so many people are showing up that there are lines up to three hours long. Of course she’s not coming to Cleveland…maybe next time. NPR gave it a nice review.
Brown University early 1980’s: Boy loves girl; girl loves different boy; different boy is crazy. Same old story. I wanted so much to like this novel but couldn’t get into it at all. It took me forever. Blah blah blah. Sadly not as brilliant as his other novels.
We went on a trip to Amish Country on Saturday. We went mostly to go to our favorite furniture store as we wanted to buy the end tables we have been waiting to buy for 10 years, but as everyone knows, the real reason to go to Amish country is to go to Der Dutchman. There is nothing better on a cold raining Ohio Saturday afternoon, (really any afternoon), than eating broasted chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and another side of stuffing just because. Sophie and Grace claim they have never been before, which I think is questionable, and whined and moaned the whole way down. But after the delectable Der Dutchman they were already counting down the three months we have to wait to come pick up our new end tables to come get some more delicious Amish goodness. Good stuff.
