After an action packed day we ended up in Dupont Circle where I made a reservation at Firefly after looking through Open Table reviews. It turned out to be a good pick. We had a dinner reservation for 7:30 but still had to wait 20 minutes for a table as the place was hopping. It was a beautiful evening and everyone was out. After having a beer at the bar we eventually made it to our table. For firsts, Jack had a bowl of matzah ball soup and Courtney and I split a plate of shrimp and grits. The shrimp and grits were great – creamy and cheesey. I don’t think I have ever had grits before… I like them. For seconds Jack had a plate of sausage and greens, Courtney had a vegetable casserole of braised endive, asian mushrooms and other veggies over polenta and I had a soft shell crab. All were good. The soft shell crab was a work of art. I wish I would have taken a picture. It tasted as good as it looked – crispy, chewy and just a little bit spicy. One of the best dishes I have had in a long time. We skipped dessert and had ice cream at a place a few blocks down the street.
the check came in a jelly jar lit up by fireflies.
After walking and walking and walking we stopped for lunch at Pizza Paradiso in Georgetown. Courtney was happy and officially declared it vacation as she had a peroni on draft for lunch. We split a big salad of greens, white beans and artichokes and ordered two big pizzas…a margarita and one with pepperoni. The margarita was the best…it always is. The pizzas were very good; crust nice and crispy and charred, chewy in the center, with fresh mozarella and just a small amount of sauce. Just the way we like it. Again, a good place to be.
I made a reservation at Graffiato about three or four weeks ago once we knew for sure when we were going. Graffiato is Top Chef contestant Mike Isabella’s restauraunt in China Town and is a hot ticket. It reminds me a lot of Cleveland’s Lola but a lot more casual. Everything is small plates and we tried a lot of good stuff. We split six plates: red and yellow beats with a citrus sauce; flatbread with pepperoni sauce; a platter of six different cheeses that we chose; hangar steak with a green sauce served with little chunks of deep fried polenta (mmmmmm); pecorino tortellini with peas, pea tendrils and mint; and salmon served over a bean puree with arthichokes and capers. All were excellent. We split three desserts: chocolate cake with salted caramel gelato; blood orange cheesecake with passion fruit sauce; and a serving of mango sorbet. Again, all were excellent.
Grace texted me Friday afternoon at work and said she was looking at my blog and thought I needed a new update and would be happy to go out to eat with us so I can post something. Sneaky. It doesn’t take much to talk us into going out so we decided to head out to Bar Cento on West 25th when we got home from work. Grace wanted to go there for her birthday back in March but we never made it. We went early as it was Friday night and got a table right away. It actually wasn’t crowded at all. The Market Garden Brewery across the street was packed though. We ended up ordering a bunch of different things and sharing. We had some warm olives, mussels, frites, a large plate of different meats, cheeses and pickles and two pizzas. Quite the smorgasbord. We had a pizza blanco, just oil, and cheese, and an olive pizza that we have had before here and is really good. The mussels were good and buttery and the fries were great as always with three different types of mayonnaise to dip in. The meat platter had a nice selection with a little bit of everything. I tried goose liver for the first time so am proud of myself. I liked it too. We ate pretty much everything. Just brought home some of the pizza and some of the meat that was left over.
Eat on Edgecliff rating: B+ (The Pizza brings the score down)
happy sistershappy that it’s friday nightlooking good grace!
We finally made it Lola after trying several times over the years to make a reservation without thinking weeks ahead. I made this reservation about three weeks ahead of time. I surprised Courtney on Friday and instead of going home after work we took a left turn instead of a right turn and went to downtown Cleveland and spent the night at the Ritz and went out to dinner at Lola. We had a great night…more details on my personal blog…eventually. Lola is of course Michael Simon’s flagship restauraunt that is now located on East 4th Street. We were at the orginial Lola probably about ten years ago when it was over on the west side. After a glass of wine in our beautiful room at the Ritz and a complimentary cocktail in the lounge, we headed to East 4th. Lola is very dark, with a beautiful bar, looking out on the street, with an alibaster top lighted from underneath with a huge wall of wine behind the bar. Very cool. We had a nice table right in the middle overlooking the open kitchen. We ordered ourselves a bottle of white burgandy and relaxed. I had beef cheek pierogies for an appetizer and Courtney had the artichoke soup. The pierogies were filled with tender pot roast like beef with a gravy like sauce and some horseradish sauce drizzled over it. Very rich and delicious. The artichoke soup was earthy, tasty with hazelnuts sprinkled in it as well as chuncks of bacon. I had the smoked pork shop that came sliced on top of creamy polenta sauced with a barbeque sauce. Courtney had hangar steak which came with a tasty, coarsley chopped gremolata sauce that was very good. The hangar steak also came with an order of fries…which won the prize for the night as they were perfectly done. Overall I would say that the meal was great…but not over the top. I think we are becoming food snobs. We probably ordered too many heavy things though. The menu is almost all meat. But I would definately recommend going there and would like to go back and eat at the bar.
I took Grace to the orthodontist on Friday and we stopped at Eat at Joe’s on the way back to dropping her off to school. Eat at Joe’s is a teeny tiny place on the corner of Green and Mayfield next to whatever drug store is right there. I have heard about it before but never have gone there. We were there at 11:30 and the place was packed. We had to wait until a table opened up…just about 5 minutes because they move fast there! What a great place. Simple and cheap and quick. Breakfast or lunch anytime with just a handful of things on the menu. I had a BLT and Grace had a cheeseburger. Both were good. The best part was that you could order hash browns instead of fries and the hash browns were awesome…crispy and greasy. mmmm. Highly recommend.
La Fiesta is our go to neighborhood mexican place that we have been to many times over the years. It is on the corner of Richmond and Wilson Mills right next to the Richmond Mall. The food and service is always good. We stopped for dinner on Monday after going to the bridal shop for Sophia and Grace to pick up their bridesmaids dresses for George and Carrie’s July wedding. Don’t they look nice?
Back to La Fiesta…. I had a margarita on the rocks, just ok, nothing special. Their chips and salsa are very good with hot, crunchy chips and homemade, spicier than usual salsa. We all ordered standard mexican restaurant fare. The enchildas with green sauce were very good as well as the tamales. Courtney had vegetarian tamales and I had ones with some sort of shredded meat in them. We all ordered too much, but mexican always makes good leftovers.
We have been trying to arrange going to dinner at Crop with John, Mary, Tony, and MaryAnn for MONTHS and our schedules finally aligned and we got to go last night. Crop used to be over on the west side somewhere and moved to a new space at West 25th and Lorain right across the street from the West Side Market this fall. The space used to be a bank built in the 1920’s and they rehabbed the space beautifully. Huge ornate ceiling, huge restored mural behind the bar and rehabbed marble that they used everywhere. It is quite impressive. We had a great dinner as well. I had some sort of Manhattan that they have on their cocktail menu that was delecious – especially the liquor soaked cherries that came with it. We started dinner with an amuse bouche of raw tuna with a piece of roasted tomato in a vinagrette. We split 4 appetizers among us: balsamic popcorn, cherry bomb, calamari and the soft shelled crab which was the app special of the evening. They were all excellent – especially the cherry bomb which was a cherry tomato, stuffed with chorizo sausage, wrapped in wonton and deep fried; also the soft shell crab was super fresh, tender and tasty. All our entrees were great. I had veal shanks which came with white beans and olives. Very tender and delecious. Courtney has the fish special of the evening – some kind of Hawaiian fish that I don’t remember the name of but was really good, served over a black rice pilaf. We split a chocolate pretzel moussey cake desert as well as some pastries that were like homemade pop tarts. After the meal we were given a tour of the old bank vault in the basement that you can rent out for parties. Very cool. Great place. I can’t wait to go back.
Eat on Edgecliff Rating: A- (The minus is only because they put TVs on the wall in the bar…sorry John)

We just got back from a week long trip to beautiful Grayton Beach, Florida where we spent the week on the beach and of course eating lots of good food. The week in food….
Friday, April 7, 2012 We stopped in Montgomery, Alabama on the drive down and went to Dreamland for dinner. We saw and smelled this BBQ restaurant when we were on our walk around Montgomery when we first got there to stretch our legs. So being the good Catholics that we are on Good Friday and all we decided to really be bad and have lots of meat. We got a table right away as it was pretty early. It is a chain of BBQ places in Alabama. We split three different plates of BBQ. Ribs, chicken, pulled pork and a bunch of sides and a pitcher of beer for us road weary adults. I also had a small bowl of Brunswick stew. All the BBQ was good but the chicken was especially good. We think it was smoked and was nice and tender. The sauce had a good kick to it with lots of pepper.

Saturday, April 8, 2012 We went to the Pizza Bar in Seaside on our first night to celebrate Graham’s 10th birthday. Seaside is a great, interesting place where there are tons of options for great food…at a high price I should add. We sat at a long table outside across from where everyone was walking to the beach so it was good people watching spot. Us happy to be on vacation adults had Peroni beers. We ordered three salads to split, one of them a really great beat salad with lots of different kinds of beets. We had 5 pizzas and an order of mushroom risotto. The best pizza by far was the simple margarita. Everything was very fresh and the pizza was nice and crispy. The risotto was rich and yummy with lots of good Parmesan. It was a fun dinner and thought the margarita pizza was especially good.

Monday, April 9, 2012 We went to the Red Bar on Grayton Beach for lunch on Monday. This is the third or fourth time going here over the past few years. It’s a local institution and the only place that most people know about in Grayton Beach. We have found that it is way way way to crowded at dinner time so usually go at lunch. It is a ramshackle place layered full of stuff and super laid back. Everyone is nice and casual as all things in Grayton beach. We didn’t get there until 1:30 so got a table right away. The nice and relaxed adults had blue moon on draft. All the girls had grilled cheese – they alway do – big thick pieces of sour dough bread with lots of fries. Courtney had a grilled fish sandwich and I had a cup of seafood gumbo and a cheeseburger. Everything was good as usual. Don’t forget to bring your cash as they don’t take credit.
patiently waiting for their grilled cheese
Wednesday, April 11th We went to Stinky’s Fish Camp for Dinner on Wednesday night on the way home from our expedition to the outlet mall (the mall was NOT my idea!). Stinky’s is west of Grayton beach, an area we haven’t explored much. John and Alissa told us to try out stinky’s as they were there last week and they liked it. We waited for a table for about a half hour and got a really nice table in the corner overlooking the lake the restaurant is on. The hungry adults were drinking the spring seasonal blue moon which was very good. We split a wedge salad and a house salad both with green godess dressing which was very good. The dressing was a dark green, lots of herbs and very tasty. Need to try to replicate this one when our herb garden is going this summer. I got a dozen raw oysters that we’re wonderful. Big fatties that were very fresh. So happy. I talked Courtney and Claire into trying then. Courtney liked them, and had a second. Claire not so much. I had fried shrimp, Claire and grace had fried fish, courtney had grilled red snapper and Sophie had pasta with cheese. All very good, Courtney’s especially. The fried stuff’s batter was good…was cornmealey and had a bit of a kick to it. Very southern. Was a good dinner and would definitely go back…especially for the oysters and salad dressing!
Yeayyy vacationSomeone very happy after slurping their oystersSomeone not so happy after trying their first oyster
Friday, April 12th
I just saw found this picture googling... we were sitting right there...how weird...the sand really is that white and the water really is that blue.
For our last night we went to Seaside for dinner and did a mini-progressive dinner around the different food trucks and food stands. Earlier in the week at Seaside we had BBQ for lunch from one of the trucks, the aforementioned pizza extravaganza and three mornings two of us biked to the brazilian coffee shop for awesome coffee. For dinner this evening we started at Pickles and got an order of fried pickles. Claire and Sophie snuck up here one afternoon and got them and said how good they are so we had to try them. They are quartered dill pickles, breaded and deep fried that you dip in ranch dressing. How can you go wrong? They were delish. I got 1/2 dozen oysters (yeay) from the Shrimp Shack and Courtney and I split a 1/2 lb. of steamed Royal Red Shrimp. This is the only place we have seen them and they are AWESOME. SO GOOD. MMMM. Really. I wish they didn’t cost so much as we would eat them every day. The girls got tacos and burritos from the taco truck. We ate behind the shrimp shack in a pavillion overlooking the ocean during sunset. Truly a great place. We decided to get another order of fried pickles….just because. We wrapped the night up with a stop at the ice cream place on the square where we had some gelato and ice cream. Perfect way to end our great trip.
Thumbs up for the fried pickes. (p.s. I love my new iphone...it takes such nice pictures)Oyster and Shocktop Still LifeWhat a view.LOVE those royal reds!contemplating our 16 hour drive home in 6 hours.
We did a quick errand run out to Legacy Village Saturday afternoon in-between Big Shows and stopped at Brio for a quick dinner. We have been there several times and always have a nice meal. We sat at a table at the bar and had the wedge salad with blue cheese, bacon and tomatoes. It is delicious and I always get this when we go here. (Why does salad taste so good at a restauraunt and it just doesn’t taste the same at home?) I had penne with a blue cheese sauce, chicken and asparagus. Sinful and tastey. Courtney has pasta with sun dried tomatoes and spinach in a white wine sauce. Claire had similar with chicken and mushrooms. The food came too fastwasn’t that was ok as we had to get back.
Eat on Edgecliff rating: B (can’t give a chain better than that by principle)
Well we woke up really late this morning and it was our car pool week which means I ran out the door without any lunch. The good news is that I had nothing scheduled at noon and the sun was shining so I headed out to Presti’s for lunch. I have been there probably dozens of times over the past 5 years and always get the same thing: a piece of artichoke pizza and a piece of pepperoni and sausage pizza. Today was no different but was a bonus in that I got to sit outside in the sun all by myself and enjoy the tasty treats. Life is good and pizza makes it even better.
I went on a quick trip to Washington D.C. to drive Jack there as he is doing his first co-op there for the next two and 1/2 months. Of course we had to try out some of the eats there.
Marvin. 3/24/12. Jack and I met Stephanie Maxwell on Saturday night at Marvin on U street. After investigating a bit, U street appears to be a growing neighborhood with lots of new places. Marvin looked like a good choice with out being crazy expensive. It is a strange combination of belgian and soul food. Strange, yet true and very tasty I must say. Stephanie and I both started with an asparagus salad and Jack with a house salad. I had a big bowl of mussels and clams, Jack had a stew of different cuts of pork over white beans and Stephanie had the best dish of the night: chicken and waffles. It was a boneless piece of crispy fried chicken over a belgian waffle over collard greens with a thing of syrup on the side. I have always been scared to order it but will definately next time. Along with the good belgian beers and the atmosphere I would definately recommend as a nice place to go. Stephanie was off to meet friends after and Jack and I went in search of a bar to watch the NCAA games going on. We couldn’t find anywhere on U street as everywhere was packed so we hopped back on the Metro and went to somewhere across from the Verizon center…and could not resisting stopping at Red Velvet on the way for some very tasty cupcakes.
Matchbox. 3/25/12. Sunday morning we met my Aunt Ellen and Uncle Walt for brunch in Capital Hill. We met there as this is the neighborhood where the firm that Jack will be working is located. We got there ahead of time and walked to check out where Jack’s new workplace was located…just two blocks from the Metro in a nice rowhouse on the corner. It looks nice. We were initially going to go somewhere else, but Aunt Ellen suggested Matchbox and we noticed it right across the street from the place where we were going to go and it looked nicer. Jack and I ordered a pan of hot sweet rolls while we were waiting and they came just as Ellen and Wally arrived. Hot and delicious. I had a waffle with fresh fruit, Ellen and Wally each had the banana bread french toast with raspberries and rum spiked syrup and Jack ordered off the regular menu and got a chicken pesto pizza. Everything was great. The place was hopping and by the time we left it was totally full and a there was a small jazz group playing in the background. Very nice. Actually the whole block was full of people doing Sunday brunch and lots of different restaurants. It was nice to be able to spend time with Ellen and Wally. (our outing was also featured on Ellen’s world famous blog.)
Hank’s Oyster Bar. 3/25/12. After spending a nice afternoon in Dupont Circle we ended up here on Sunday evening and were happy to sit on the patio as the sun had finally came out after some really crappy weather. I read about Hank’s somewhere and it was on my list so I was happy we were able to get a table as the place was packed. From the very beginning we had the WORST service ever. It was pretty comical. You name it and it happened…plus it was happening everywhere, the runners kept bringing stuff out to tables and people told them they didn’t order it, or they already had it…someone gave us a plate of fries for no reason. On the plus side the food was very good. I love raw oysters and the ones I had were super fresh and wonderful. I could have sat there and ate oysters all night. I also had a crabcake and old bay fries…two orders :). Jack got fried chicken with side of potatoes and mac and cheese (he’s on his own for the next two months so needed to load up on the carbs). I had a couple of tasty Grolsch’s and enjoyed the scenery. The parade of people outside was great to watch. It was a good thing we weren’t in any rush.
